God's Intention Matters

Genesis 1-2 records God's creation of everything, including the first man and the first woman. They were joined in the first marriage, and in time, they were given children through the natural reproductive process that God also created. In Psalm 127:3-5, Bible readers find God’s view of children, and sadly, it is a stark contrast to the way many feel today. Through Solomon, God said, “Behold, children are a gift of the Lord, the fruit of the womb is a reward. Like arrows in the hand of a warrior, so are the children of one’s youth. How blessed is the man whose quiver is full of them; they will not be ashamed when they speak with their enemies in the gate.” God intended for children to be born to a mother and father who are joined in marriage, and for those children to be welcomed as a treasured gift from God.
Sadly, many view children as a blight, a plague, as a tragic and unintended consequence. They have engaged in physically intimate relationships with others for only the immediate pleasure they bring, while ignoring God’s intention that such interactions be confined, existing only between a husband and his wife, with no others in attendance (Heb. 13:4). Those who live promiscuously have abandoned God’s intention for marriage and physical intimacy. God’s natural order continues, however, and children are then born to parents who are not prepared to meet them with joy and appreciation for the blessing that God intended them to be.
In such situations, many will kill the child on the idolatrous altar of their own selfish feelings. Some even rationalize such murderous activities as a service to the children themselves. Nothing could be further from the truth, and nothing could be further from God’s intention (Jer. 19:5). Make physical intimacy a marital reward as God intended, and let children then be a blessing in your life and your family according to God’s will.
