Is Jesus the Messiah? In 2 Samuel 7:12, God made a promise to David that partly concerned Solomon but was also fulfilled in the Messiah. God said to David, “I will raise up your descendant after you, who will come forth from you, and I will establish his kingdom.” Certainly, God intended this promise to be applied to Solomon, who is the subject contextually, but it also applies to the Messiah, who, at this moment, is promised to come from the line of David. Jeremiah also prophesied, “‘Behold, the days are coming,’ declares the Lord, ‘When I will raise up for David a righteous Branch; and he will reign as king and act wisely and do justice and righteousness in the land. In his days Judah will be saved, and Israel will dwell securely; and this is his name by which he will be called, ‘The Lord our righteousness’” (Jeremiah 23:5-6).
Jeremiah’s prophecy shows that Solomon is not the only descendant of David God was concerned with. There is another, the Messiah, who was coming, whose kingdom God promised to establish, and who would reign as the perfect king reigning over the perfect kingdom.
The Jews of Jesus’ day knew about these prophecies, and they were looking for the son of David, the Messiah. After seeing the miracles and hearing the teaching of Jesus, many called out to Him, “Son of David,” on multiple occasions (Matthew 9:27; 15:22; 20:30; 21:9). Jesus was a descendant of David, verified in Matthew 1:1 and 1:6, and although He was not the kind of Messiah the Jews were expecting, He is the only one God proved true. In Acts 2:34-36, Peter announced that God had raised Jesus from the dead and had made Him both Lord and Christ. Jesus received the kingdom and fulfilled the prophecies made concerning the son of David. He is the Messiah!
