Yes, God Knows the Difference

Does God know the difference between being one among many and being the only one you serve? In Exodus 20:1-6, God commanded the Israelites to worship Him exclusively as God. When the Israelites made and worshipped the golden calf in Exodus 32, it became obvious that God recognizes when He has been wholly replaced by an idol. But what about times when people tried to have God share the throne of their hearts?
After Israel was taken into Assyrian captivity, the king of Assyria moved strangers from several countries into the land (2 Kings 17:1ff). During the initial part of their stay, the Lord sent lions that killed some of those strangers because they did not know or fear Him. As a result, an Israelite priest was sent to teach them how to serve God. From verses 28-41, God recorded how they feared Him, but also served other gods, according to their customs. In summary, God says they did not listen to Him; instead, they held to their traditional idol worship while also trying to worship Him. So, yes, God knows the difference between ruling your heart completely and being asked to share the throne.
Furthermore, God is not satisfied with having a share of your heart’s throne. He is pleased only with uncontested sovereignty. Matthew 6:24 records this requirement from God. Jesus said, “No one can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and wealth.” The message is clear: you cannot serve God acceptably while making anything else His rival. Because, yes, God knows the difference. Give Him total rulership and control. Let His word direct every step you take, and then you will please the Lord.
